Dear Downtown South Insiders:

Thank you for your continued support and interest in Downtown South! We have some important updates to share with you, given the tremendous activity surrounding this project over the last two weeks.

City & County Greenlight Feasibility Study

As you know, we have been actively seeking Interlocal Funds (tourism tax revenue) from the city and county for the Downtown Sports & Entertainment Stadium, which will be the centerpiece and catalyst for Downtown South.

Since we announced the project in June, a groundswell of support for the project generated more than 1,000 letters, phone calls, and emails to elected officials. We’re proud to report that your support has made an impact. Last week, both Wake County and the City of Raleigh voted to conduct a feasibility study on the stadium. This is an important step forward for Downtown South, and we’re confident that their investigation will help the city and county gain a deeper appreciation for the impact that the development will have on our economy and our community.

Land Use/Urban Planning Experts Study Downtown South

Last week, a group of nationally renowned land use and urban planning experts representing the Urban Land Institute (ULI) visited Raleigh to conduct an intensive review of the Downtown South project.

The ULI panel compiled its findings into a comprehensive report that described Downtown South as “a rare opportunity to transform this area into a vibrant gateway to the city and an economic investment that benefits all.” We couldn’t agree more. Downtown South has the potential to be one of the single most transformational projects the city has seen. But it’s about so much more than this project. It’s about the catalyst it will be for growth and economic development. It’s about how it will help shape the future of our great city.

Ensuring the Community Remains Involved in the Process

A key theme we heard loud and clear from the ULI panel – a theme that has been of utmost importance to us since day one – is how critical community and stakeholder engagement will be to our success. We view South Raleigh and Southeast Raleigh as priority partners in this project and will seek to set a new standard for how to best engage the community, so that we become part of the culture and history, not a disruption or reinvention of it. We are already collaborating on opportunities to meet in person with community members to ensure we provide the right venues and platforms to get their essential feedback.

These town hall forums and events will play a critical role in shaping the Downtown South development, and ensuring that it meets the needs of our community as a whole. We hope that you will join us at these upcoming community events and will keep you posted as they are scheduled.

As you can tell, it’s been an extraordinary two weeks, and we’re proud to be working with you to make this truly transformational project a reality.

Thank you for your support,
